The Alaska Ski For Women at Kincaid Park is the largest women-only cross country ski event in North America. Brian emceed it for his third year. Traditionally, it's held on Superbowl Sunday.
The sun was just starting to light up Kincaid Park at 9am when I arrived for the Alaska Ski For Women. I took this photo while heading to the announcer booth.
Many volunteers were busy on the track and at the chalet. It takes a lot of work to run the largest all-women cross country ski event in North America.
Here we have the first wave of the Duathlon ready to go. I took this photo from the booth. See the glass reflections.
My partner in crime, Alice Knapp, co-emceed the event. She is a librarian with the Anchorage School District and an active ski enthusiast. Everyone thinks she's great!
Participants at the ASFW must have either a partner or be one a team (to motivate each other). Each year, the costumes are amazing and fun.
ASFW helps to race money to fund local organizations that help stop violence against women and children, such as AWAIC.
Skijoring: a winter sport where a person on skis is pulled by a horse, a dog (or dogs) or a motor vehicle...and in this case, a Mom dressed like a dog.
LOOK! IT'S THE BLACK EYED PEAS!! There's Fergie and Will I. Am, and...and...and the other guys. Maybe I can get an autograph.
FYI, the "other guys" in the Black Eyed Peas are Taboo and Apl de Ap.
FYI, these are Rubik's Cubes. It is easier to solve a Rubik's Cube than to figure out why someone chooses the name Apl de Ap.
Loved this costume...wait for it...
Pirates of the Carrot-bean!!

Robin Kornfield of ASFW with Senator Mark Begich (who helped give out awards and start the Party Wave) and KTUU's Jackie Purcell who helped me judge the costumes. A fun event for all and a great cause!
