SKI FOR WOMEN 2013

On Feb 3, 2013, Brian Ross from was proud to once again emcee the Alaska Ski For Women--the largest all-women cross country ski event in North America.

  •
It was a warm day for skiing, and the warmest I can recall it ever being for the Alaska Ski For Women, North America's largest all-women cross country ski event. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
  •
It's the legendary emcee team of Brian Ross (that's me!) and Alice Knap. I would also be one of the costume contest judges with Olympic skier Nina Kemppel and KTUU's Jackie Purcell. Winners are at the end of the gallery. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org

The 17th annual Alaska Ski For Women begins--a fundraiser for local organizations that help end the cycle of abuse against women and children, such as STAR, AWAIC, and Covenant House. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
  •
I snapped as many photos as he could while announcing and costume judging. Called "the Mardi Gras" of the North, many colorful and creative costumes ski by. Anyone up for a game of Tetris? www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
  •
There was a rack of billiard balls. And sometimes the cue ball would ski right into them and break! It got the crowd roaring with laughter. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
  •
I am not sure of the official count, but my sheet of names went up to bib number 1500, and more probably registered on the day of the event. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
  •
We had three costume categories. Best Duo, Best Team, and Best Kiddos. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
  •
We had animals, Fandango paper sack puppets, popcorn, snow flakes, fairies, and even kids pulling Mom-mushers! www.alaskaskiforwomen.org

Here's Alice, busy announcing as many people as she could crossing the finish line. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
  •
Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell came by to thank all of the skiers for supporting such a great cause, and to give out prizes to winners. Here he is with The Sweethearts, winners of Best Kiddos. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org

Winner of Best Duo: Snow Shoe Hares ...or is that Snow Shoe Hair? www.alaskaskiforwomen.org

The toughest category is always Best Team. "A Forest To Be Reckoned With" had branches that swayed and bounced as they did their special dance, narrowly edging out several other creative costumes. www.alaskaskiforwomen.org
