Special Olympics Winter Games 2013

The 2013 Special Olympics Alaska Winter Games were held March 9-11. Brian was there as an announcer and a fan.

  •
Flags were flying on fairly warm conditions at Hilltop Ski Area, where the Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding events would be held. http://www.specialolympicsalaska.org/
  •
Opening ceremonies were Friday evening. We had live music, inspiring stories, and a video from Senator Begich. Representatives from the APD Torch Run were there, too. My camera couldn't catch much in the low light, though.
  •
Saturday morning at the slopes. S.O. Athletes from across the state were getting on their gear...
  •
    ...putting on their bib numbers...
  •
...and hitting the slopes at Hilltop. http://www.specialolympicsalaska.org/
  •
One of my Special Olympics buddies, it's Mega-Misty Cunitz. She was also one of Alaska's representatives at the Special Olympics World Games in Korea.
  •
    Gearing up.
  •
Totally focused on the event to come.
  •
This year, blue and gold scarves were handed out to volunteers and athletes. Over my shoulder, the view of the slopes as we announced the events. http://www.specialolympicsalaska.org/
  •
Skier and boarder athletes love their nicknames. I think we had over 50 competitors doing multiple timed runs.
  •
With me on the mic was Ryan Peterson of Spenard Builder's Supply. We had several volunteers from SBS helping us over the weekend.
  •
OMG!! IT'S RACHAEL ROCKIN' ROBINSON!! http://www.specialolympicsalaska.org/
  •
Note that Racing Rachael's ski pants and boots match. She brings speed and style to the slopes.
  •
And here's another speedy rocket--Shannon Sullivan. We call her TURBO. She looks like she's moving fast even when standing still.
  •
My special two-mic tecnique. I had one for indoors and the other for outside announcing.
  •
Here are some proud athletes at the end of day one during the medal ceremonies (my favorite part).
  •
We had representatives from the Anchorage Police Department, the Anchorage Fire Department, and the US Air Force on JBER presenting the awards.

This is the moment that gets me every time. Special Olympics Athletes--proud and supportive.
  •
    Going for the GOLD!
  •
Teams from all over Alaska, including Tanana Valley, the Mat-su, Valdez and more come together to compete, and leave with new friendships.

  •
Tools of the trade for announcing.
  •
Day two, and I have a snazzy new T-shirt to go with the scarf.
  •
Test runs before the events. It was a very snowy day on Sunday. An icy patch had formed in the gate second from the top which caused quite a few wipe-outs.
  •
    The thrill of victory!!

    Look at that form!
  •
    OH YEAH!!
  •
    Okay...smile!
  •
    Okay, NOW smile!
  •
This was how much snow I got on me just going out to my car to get something. Luckily, I was able to warm up again with...
  •
    Mmmmm...a nice bowl of CHOWDAH!
  •
The day two award ceremonies were quite snowy. The steps were too slick to walk across. But it made for great snow balls.

Snow on the medals and the announcer sheet did not slow us down. In fact, next year maybe we'll add a snow angel event. Just my suggestion.
  •
And that concludes our day at Hilltop Ski Area for the Special Olympics AK skiing and snow boarding events. Keep checking Magic's website and Facebook page and I'll let you know if I find more.
